It was such an immediate hit, that barely a month after its debut, Dickens was embroiled in a legal fight against a publishing company that had printed pirated copies. Though he spent mere weeks writing it, Dickens' novella about the original Christmas grinch has been a holiday staple for nearly two centuries, giving rise to countless adaptations for stage and screen. "Marley was dead, to begin with." With those six words, Charles Dickens invited us into the world of A Christmas Carol, indelibly introducing us to Ebenezer Scrooge, the three ghosts of Christmas, Tiny Tim, and a full cast of memorable characters. But in the case of the current pandemic, doubts were expressed by readers of this column about whether it even qualifies as a Black Swan. Preparation for Black Swan events, to the extent that it is even possible, has to be balanced against the demands for short-term results. The doctoring of animals is interwoven with triumph and failure, humour and sadness. As James Herriot's thoughts wander back over the rich memories from his life as a veterinary surgeon, a host of new characters and old friends, animal and human, march across the pages, all revealing Herriot himself with his dedication to the job and his unequalled capacity for seeing the silly side of things. The book is about those things and the eternal fascinating challenge of veterinary work. He tells us of his experiences in air force blue, looking at service life with characteristic dry humour, but his heart is still in the green hills of Yorkshire, with his newly-married wife and his animal patients. David Fincher’s “Zodiac,” with its tantalizing ambiguities, might stand as an exception to the form - a singular winding creep-out, without the closure we’re thirsting for - yet even there you feel, by the end, that you’ve glimpsed the face of evil.īut “ The Night of the 12th,” the French thriller that was nominated for 10 César Awards and won six of them, including best picture (it opens here on May 19), throws the audience a slow-motion curveball that’s intended to tinker with our dreams. We will know who the killer is, and in knowing that a kind of order will have been restored. Watching a police-procedural homicide drama, whether it’s the grungiest of VOD potboilers or the most visionary film of the genre, Michael Mann’s silvery, dread-drenched “Manhunter,” we more or less know one thing: At the end of two hours, the grisly mystery we’ve been dunked in will have its catharsis and its resolution. Fundamental to this fear was his understanding of atavism – of evolutionary throwbacks, survivals and regressions – in modern industrial society, and his extraordinary stories were only one expression of a contemporary culture involving eugenicists, political economists, and prominent authors of the Gothic and ‘weird’ traditions between the 1890s and the 1930s. Yet in focusing on certain tropes of his work, such as the many memorable monsters he created to populate his stories, from the infinite effervescence named Yog-Sothoth to the dreaded cephalopod Cthulhu, scholars have overlooked a deeper terror structuring practically all of his writings, the chillingly resonant fear that, amidst the chaos of globalization, miscegenation, and economic decline, ‘Anglo-Saxon’ civilization would surrender to lesser races. The early twentieth-century weird writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft is today best remembered for his genre defining style of academic noir pulp fiction.
